Like many of you, I’ve driven around for far too long with stuff I didn’t need in my car. This brought about the realization that you can save money by removing weight from your car. If you’ve ever picked up some friends and witnessed your car lose acceleration, this is what carrying extra baggage does. Think about when race cars want to shave time off their track runs, they remove as much weight as possible. This includes seats, trim work, spare tires, and more. We’ve already discussed how you can Save Money by Driving Slower, but excess weight shouldn’t be how you accomplish that. Besides taking your seats out isn’t necessarily an option for most people who aren’t trying to improve their track times. However, if you’re just trying to get to work every day, and want to save some money, this can be a useful train of thought.
Save money by removing dead weight
Take an inventory of what’s in your car that you don’t really need or use. Especially, things that weight a lot. That set of dumbbells from your exercise class, gotta go. Still have that extra bag of potting soil you were going to take back? Get rid of it. How about that case of water bottles or the bag of school books that weighs more than an entire boy band? You can let it all go. Only put things you need in your vehicle when you use them. For example, you only need golf clubs when you’re actually going golfing. By keeping your car load light, you’ll put less strain on your vehicle, both reducing the wear and tear and saving even more by using less gasoline.
What to keep in your car
There are a few things that you clearly need to keep. A roadside kit including safety flares, warning triangles, jumper cables, and maybe a can of Fix-A-Flat can stay. A tire plug kit can be useful but whether it’ll work for you depends on your vehicle type. Maybe, some emergency food and water kits or emergency blankets just to be safe. Your spare tire and car jack are obvious necessities but there isn’t that much more that you’d require. Of course, what you carry around is up to you. However, adopting these practices will simply help you save money by removing weight from your car.
